What is a "Smart Home"?

The fundamental key of a home of the future is to have a strong networking foundation.  It doesn't mean that a multitude of expensive gadgets has to be purchased during the construction of a home. What it does mean, though, is that strategic planning of your home network is vital for it to be a true home of the future.

The first step in planning your home network is determining what you want it to do. Do you want a fully automated home, with lights that turn themselves on, drapes that open and shut on their own, and a remotely controlled HVAC ( heating, ventilation and air conditioning ) unit?

Do you want a sophisticated communications system with multiple telephone lines, video monitors at the doors, and intercoms throughout your home?

All these options sound great, but, at what cost?

Some of these options are quite expensive and as technology improves and becomes more cost effective for the average consumer these options will be more readily accessible in the future.  That is why it is so crucial to have a strong home networking foundation in place.  The important thing to keep in mind is look towards the future. You may not think you'll want internet capability by the refrigerator, dishwasher or stove, but, the fact of the matter is, appliance manufacturers are practicing a form of planned obsolescence. They believe that consumers will choose to buy an internet capable washer or dryer over fixing their old, broken one.

Think about the benefits.  Manufacturers will be able to more readily determine how you use an appliance, when you use an appliance, how frequently you use it, and so on.  But, more importantly, manufacturers will be able to support the customers as long as they own the appliance.  Manufacturers will be able to tell you when you installed the device and then automate registration. They will know when the appliance breaks, probably before you know yourself.

With the right internal diagnostic chips, the manufacturer will be able to identify the problem and send a properly trained serviceperson out to your house, complete with part in hand.

Thinking ahead and pre-wiring your entire home for every foreseeable contingency may not be as expensive as you think. In fact, the cost of running higher quality more capable wiring to most of your home isn't all that much more than running those old-fashioned telephone and cable T.V. wires that you were going to install in the first place. Also, running conduit to each room in the home is the most proactive thing you can do to make a home of the future a reality.

As we all know fiber-optics is the wave of the future. Right now fiber-optics in the home isn't cost effective and the applications for fiber within a home are near zero among all the thousands of consumer electronic devices sold today.

Although someday in the future, fiber-optic cable may be the most common cabling for connecting home audio, video, data and phone networks, today no clear standards govern which of the many various kinds of fiber will be commonly used to connect home devices, and no consensus has been reached on how fiber will be connected and laid out in a home.

Running a conduit network throughout your home will be the most proactive way to build for the future.  Who knows what the future holds for technology and homes and how they'll interact together and with us?  What we do know is that the sky is the limit and being prepared, ready and always looking towards tomorrow is the wave of the future. Especially, when/if you decide it's time to sell your home that was built with the future in mind.
